Tractor-Trailer Driver Hospitalized, I-81 Reopens After Crash In Central PA (Update)

Part of Interstate 81 has reopened following a crash in Central Pennsylvania, authorities say.

An empty tractor-trailer rolled down an embankment on I-81 around 10 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023, authorities told Daily Voice. 

The driver has been hospitalized according to Pennsylvania State Police. 

The fuel tank of the tractor-trailer ruptured in the crash, state police explained. 

The area that was affected is the southbound lanes between Exit 100: PA 442 - Pine Grove and Exit 90: PA 72 - Lebanon near the Dauphin and Lebanon county line, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  

All lanes were closed and there were major delays in the area, according to PennDOT. 

Alternates roads recommended for travelers were Route 443 and I-78.

The area reopened around 4 p.m., according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.

The cause of the crash was the wet roads due to heavy rain, PSP explained.
